Alpha decay is the release of a helium nucleus ( ) from the parent nucleus. The parent's atomic number has therefore decreased by 2, while the atomic mass has decreased by 4. An alpha particle is a relatively large particle to be emitted during radioactive decay. It is therefore relatively easy to shield people from alpha particles. However, since the particle is so large, if the alpha particles escape the shielding, large amounts of damage can occur.
